Layer-0 Meaning

A foundational infrastructure that allows multiple Layer 1 blockchains to be built on top of it and, crucially, to communicate with each other. A Layer-0 provides the "connectivity layer" and often a shared security model for the chains in its ecosystem.

Cosmos and Polkadot are the most well-known examples of Layer-0 protocols. Instead of being a single blockchain where users trade, they are a "network of networks." They provide the "SDK" (Software Development Kit) and the "Cross-Chain" protocols that allow a developer to launch a custom L1 that is automatically "interoperable" with every other chain in the system.

Layer-0s address the "fragmentation" problem.

In the past, if you built a new L1, it was an isolated "island." With a Layer-0, that island is connected by bridges and tunnels from day one, allowing assets and data to flow freely between different chains, which is essential for a truly unified decentralized web.
