Intellectual Property (IP) Meaning

Creations of the mind-such as inventions, software code, brand names, and artistic works-that are protected by legal rights like patents, copyrights, and trademarks. IP allows creators to control how their work is used and to earn a financial return from their investment in innovation.

In the decentralized world, IP is a complex issue. Much of the industry is built on "Open Source" code, where developers intentionally give up their IP rights to allow others to copy and build upon their work.

This fosters rapid innovation but can lead to "vampire attacks" where a new project simply copies another’s code to steal their users. NFTs have introduced a new way to manage IP.

Some projects grant the "commercial rights" of a specific NFT to the owner, allowing them to create merchandise or even movies featuring their specific character. This "decentralized IP" model turns the community into a massive, distributed marketing force for the brand.
