Instant Payment Notification URL Meaning

A specific web address (endpoint) provided by a merchant to a payment processor. After a customer completes a transaction, the processor sends a "server-to-server" message to this URL containing all the details of the payment, such as the amount, currency, and transaction ID.

This URL is the "brain" of an automated checkout system. It allows the merchant’s server to automatically update an order status to "Paid" and trigger the next step in the fulfillment process-such as sending a digital download or updating a user's account balance-without any manual work.

Security is paramount for these URLs. Developers must ensure that the messages received are actually from the payment processor and haven't been "faked" by an attacker.

This is usually done through "handshake" verifications or cryptographic signatures included in the notification message.
