Initial Coin Offering (ICO) Meaning

A crowdfunding method where a new project sells its tokens to early investors in exchange for established assets like BTC or ETH. It is the digital equivalent of an Initial Public Offering (IPO) but often lacks the same level of regulatory oversight.

Participants receive tokens that may eventually have utility within the project’s ecosystem. The ICO boom of 2017 brought thousands of new projects to life, but also led to a wave of scams and "failed" projects where the founders disappeared with the funds.

This resulted in a global regulatory crackdown, with many countries classifying ICO tokens as securities that must be registered. While less common today, the ICO was the foundational model for capital formation in the industry.

It proved that decentralized teams could raise millions of dollars from a global audience without the help of traditional venture capitalists, although the model has since evolved into more regulated formats like IEOs and IDOs.
