Inflation Meaning

The rate at which the general level of prices for goods and services rises, subsequently reducing the purchasing power of a currency. While some inflation is considered a sign of a growing economy, excessive inflation erodes savings and makes it difficult for consumers and businesses to plan for the future.

In a digital asset context, inflation refers to the increase in the total supply of a token over time. This can happen through mining rewards, staking yields, or "unlocks" for founders and early investors.

If the supply of a token grows faster than the demand for it, the price per token will generally drop. Many projects use "burning" mechanisms (destroying tokens) to counter inflation and create "deflationary" pressure.

This scarcity is a key component of an asset's value proposition. A clear, transparent inflation schedule allows investors to calculate the future "dilution" of their holdings and make informed decisions.
