The NYSE Goes Onchain, Hyperliquid Heads Onshore, and Strategy Buys Back In

September 1, 2026 |

Last week the venues did the moving. The company that owns the New York Stock Exchange lined up a partner to run tokenized securities, one of the largest decentralized exchanges mapped a regulated route into the United States, and the industry's biggest lobby threw its weight behind the rulebook that will govern stablecoins. None of it waited on the price, though the price cooperated for once, with Bitcoin closing out its strongest month since late 2024. Where and how institutions trade is being redrawn, and a $75 million exploit that froze an entire blockchain was a reminder of what still breaks.

Welcome to a new week in crypto.

A 25% month, a cooler ETF week, and a yen through 160

Bitcoin sat just below $78,000 on Monday, up about 1% on the week and more than 25% on the month, its best month since late 2024, as August closed its final trading session. Ether held near $2,510 and Solana ran roughly 8% higher on the week, while Hyperliquid's HYPE token touched an all-time high above $86.

The flows cooled from the prior week's run. US spot bitcoin ETFs drew $924.5 million in the week ending August 28, led by $938.3 million into BlackRock's IBIT, and ether funds added $824 million, but the bitcoin funds' nine-day inflow streak ended with a $201.9 million outflow on the final session. Cumulative net inflows into US bitcoin ETFs since their 2024 launch stand near $54.6 billion, with total net assets approaching $100 billion.

The macro backdrop turned less friendly. The Japanese yen breached 160 to the dollar, with strategists watching 161 to 163 as an intervention zone, though Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called the moves "pretty well contained" and saw no case for a repeat of last month's joint operation. Bond investors kept pricing the Federal Reserve to hold or hike after the Jackson Hole remarks, firming the dollar. Attention now turns to the Senate's September 15 cloture vote on the Clarity Act, the market-structure bill that has slipped through the calendar all summer.

The NYSE's parent puts tokenized securities on its roadmap

Intercontinental Exchange, the owner of the New York Stock Exchange, agreed to build tokenized-securities infrastructure with tZERO serving as design partner for ICE's NYSE-affiliated platform. ICE will also invest in tZERO's latest financing round and license its blockchain patent portfolio, which spans 103 patents covering compliant transfers, smart contracts, and corporate actions. The two firms will explore using tZERO's tokenized assets as collateral across ICE's clearing houses and affiliates.

The deal pushes tokenization from pilots toward the core of listed-market plumbing. "We have spent years building an end-to-end regulated platform for tokenized securities and related IP," tZERO chief executive Alan Konevsky said, calling the expansion into public equities "a natural step forward." ICE's Michael Blaugrund framed tZERO's regulated on-chain experience as a fit for its digital transfer-agent program supporting tokenized trading and settlement.

The arrangement extends a run of ICE bets on onchain markets, including a $600 million investment in Polymarket in March on top of $1 billion committed last October, a stake in OKX at a $25 billion valuation, and a 50-50 joint venture with OKX in May to build infrastructure for tokenized and digitally native products. For tZERO, which competes with Securitize and Superstate, the tie-up lands amid a patent dispute with Securitize over two of its products.

Hyperliquid maps a regulated route into US perps

Hyperliquid moved closer to offering perpetual futures to US traders through a partnership with Kraken parent Payward, Bloomberg reported on Monday. Under the proposed structure, Payward's Bitnomial subsidiary would give registered US users access to a selection of crypto perps linked to markets on Hyperliquid's decentralized exchange and Layer 1. Payward has already presented the outline to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, with approval still pending.

Payward acquired Bitnomial earlier this year for up to $550 million, giving it a CFTC-licensed derivatives stack spanning exchange, clearing, and brokerage. Bringing Hyperliquid fully onshore could still require the SEC and CFTC to write revised interpretive rules on custody and routing, a process that would take "at least 10 to 12 months, assuming things went quickly," former SEC senior counsel Ashley Ebersole told The Block.

The talks sit inside a wider push to build a US path for perpetuals. The Hyperliquid Policy Center last week urged the SEC and CFTC to harmonize their treatment of the products, and President Trump earlier named Hyperliquid directly, saying CFTC Chair Michael Selig was working to bring the platform onshore in a compliant fashion. The CFTC cleared Kalshi and Coinbase to list crypto perps in May. HYPE traded near $84, up more than 85% over the past year.

Strategy resumes buying into the rally

Strategy returned to the market it had stepped away from in early August, acquiring 4,603 BTC for roughly $369.7 million between August 24 and August 30 at an average price of $80,318. The purchase lifted its holdings to 845,050 BTC, worth around $66.1 billion, bought at an average of $75,412 for a total cost near $63.73 billion. The stack now equals more than 4% of Bitcoin's 21 million supply cap and sits on about $2.34 billion of paper profit. Michael Saylor previewed the move on Sunday with a post captioned "We're back."

The buying was funded through the firm's at-the-market equity program, which sold 4,531,421 MSTR shares for about $602.8 million over the week. Beyond the bitcoin purchase, Strategy spent $151.8 million repurchasing STRC preferred shares and $50.7 million on STRC dividends, ending August with $1.61 billion in cash and a $5.1 billion reserve, and roughly $19.09 billion of MSTR still available to issue. The resumption reverses the July-into-August stretch when the company was a net seller to cover its distributions.

The wider treasury cohort remains under pressure. Bitcoin Treasuries data counts 198 public companies running some bitcoin-accumulation model, with Twenty One, Metaplanet, MARA, and the Cantor-backed Bitcoin Standard Treasury Company rounding out the top five behind Strategy. Many trade well below their summer-2025 peaks as their market-cap-to-net-asset-value premiums compress; MSTR is down 63% from its high with an enterprise mNAV of 1.07, even after a 6.3% gain last week to $127.31.

Industry lines up behind the GENIUS Act's stablecoin rulebook

The Blockchain Association filed a comment letter backing the joint federal rules proposed for stablecoin issuers under the GENIUS Act, the payment-stablecoin framework signed into law last year. The rules, written together by the Treasury's FinCEN, the OCC, the Federal Reserve, the FDIC, and the National Credit Union Administration, set who may issue payment stablecoins, what backs them, and how holders redeem, and they require issuers to run a customer identification program. The comment window closed on August 21.

The association's central ask is to keep those identification obligations at the primary-market layer, where an issuer deals directly with a customer, so that everyday peer-to-peer transfers on secondary markets fall outside the issuer's compliance perimeter. It also pressed for clearer definitions of "account," "customer," and "digital asset service provider," for one-off redemptions to sit outside the rules, and for the agencies to align the effective dates of the identification and anti-money-laundering provisions rather than stack duplicative requirements.

The fight over where identity checks attach is really a fight over how stablecoins clear at scale, the point at which issuance gives way to routing, execution, and settlement. That is the layer Finery Markets builds for institutional stablecoin and FX flow.

Robinhood's chain posts a record as trading moves onto tokenized stocks

Robinhood Chain recorded $989 million in single-day decentralized-exchange volume on Friday, a record for the network, as total value locked reached $708 million, nearly double its level a month earlier. Stablecoin supply on the chain climbed to about $770 million, up 47% over the month. The activity marks a shift in what onchain traders are chasing.

Where July was driven by memecoin activity after the CASHCAT listing, August tilted toward utility and infrastructure tokens. The launchpad PONS grew from a $20 million to a $200 million-plus market cap in a single month, and LONG, another launchpad, leans on Robinhood Chain's defining feature by pairing tokens against tokenized stocks.

That equity-linked twist is becoming the chain's signature. An AI-themed token paired against tokenized NVDA shares ran from $1.5 million to a $135 million peak by August 30, and stock-paired tokens now account for roughly a quarter of all stock-linked trading volume on the network, a small but concrete look at how tokenized equities trade once they sit next to spot crypto.
